Red Raider Round-up: Piccini nets 25

Giana Piccini scored 25 points for the host Keyport High School girls basketball team in its 75-53 loss to Trinity Hall.

Piccini netted seven field goals, including two from beyond the arc, for the Red Raiders. She converted five free throws.

Trinity Hall, Middletown, sped to a 19-12 first-quarter led. It buried the Red Raiders under a 23-7 second-quarter avalanche for a 42-19 halftime lead.
Keyport trailed 60-33 through three quarters.

The Red Raiders’ Alexis Bennett, Shannan Devlin and Makaela Tuccille netted six points each.

On the collegiate front:

Rider University heavyweight wrestler Greg Velasco won one of his first seven matches of the season for the Broncs.
The senior from Union Beach is a 6-foot, 285-pounder and a psychology major.

Wagner College sophomore, quarterback Alex Thomson of Keyport, completed 90 of 175 passes for 1,085 yards and eight touchdowns last season for the Seahawks’ football team.Thomson tossed six interceptions.

He posted a 111.7 efficiency rating. He completed 51.4 percent of his passes. He averaged 98.6 passing yards per game through 11 games. His longest completion devoured 51 yards.

Thomson rushed for 300 yards and two touchdowns on 101 carries. He averaged 3.0 yards per carry His longest run was 40 yards. He averaged 27.3 rushing yards per game.

Thompson is a 6-foot-5, 220-pounder.

Two former Red Raiders–junior tightend Tyler Alvarez and junior offensive lineman Connor Thomson — were William Paterson University Pioneers last fall.

Alvarez played in six games and caught one pass for 35 yards. He is a 6-foot-2, 230-pounder. Thomson is a 6-foot-2, 280-pounder.
