UNION BEACH ā€” Police saved the life of a 28-year-old man early Monday morning using a drug that counteracts the effects of overdoses.

Cpl. Jeff Beacham and Officer Joseph Friscia were called to a Shore Road home because of a reported overdose. The officers found the unidentified man unresponsive, but breathing, according to a police statement.

The officers found a syringe close to the man and several empty full bags, or decks, of what police believe to be heroin.

The officers gave the man a dose or Narcan, a drug that counteracts the effects of an overdoses. They also gave the man high doses of oxygen.

The borough Emergency Medical Service volunteers arrived a short time later, and took the man to an unspecified hospital.
