Love the Earth.

Those three simple words are the instructions of 9-year-old Cameron Smith. She’s the winner of the Keyport Recycling Committee’s poster contest.

Carmen’s artwork will adorn the committee’s banner, which will be displayed by members at their functions and events.

The Keyport Central School fourth grader’s poster is a colorful illustration of a smiling girl with a heart for lips and Japanese-anime large eyes. The girl’s thin, fluid arms are grasping a green and blue heart in front of her chest.

Floating next to the young woman is a much larger heart — green on the edges, blue in the center, like a heart-shaped globe. The girl’s skirt and blouse are of the same green and blue as the hearts.

In the blue field of the larger heart is Carmen’s instruction stark black block letters: Love the Earth.

But why, Cameron?

“Because you should.”

Correction: An earlier version of this story identified the winner of the contest as Carmen Smith.
