KEYPORT — Peter Genovese, of NJ.com, will be at the Broad Street Diner today starting at 2 p.m. on his second tour of the state’s unofficial eateries to declare the best in the Garden State Diner State.

Broad Street is one of 10 diners selected by Genovese as finalists in his contest. Broad Street will be the second of two diners he visits today. He plans to start at Tops Diner, a powerhouse of a diner in East Newark before heading to Keyport’s vintage stainless steel gem.

During his first visit, Genovese ordered the slow cooked brisket over a potato pancake, the Mom’s meatloaf and the Keyport bowl: scrambled eggs, bacon sausage, home fries and cheddar jack.

The Broad Street Diner was formerly Stanley’s Seaport Diner. Nick and Maria Kallas of Old Bridge recently took over and rebranded the restaurant. Their efforts caught notice of Jersey Bites, the state’s premier food blog.

The contest is in two parts. Genovese will select what he thinks is the best diner, but there is also a reader’s choice contest. You can vote for the Broad Street Diner once each day from any computer, tablet or phone. You can cast your ballots here.
